If you are in need of a ring bearer, don’t rule out your loyal four-legged friend who may be able to do the job.

Letting your pooch walk you down the aisle may sound crazy, but it is a trend that many brides have embraced over the years and is still an option for many animal loving couples. There are of course many factors that come into play when deciding whether or not you should have a four legged creature escort you down the aisle, but at the end of the day it is a fun way to express your personality, your love for your pet, and a way for you to include your pet on your big day. For many, pets are a part of the family. So why not include your furry family member in your ceremony? Better yet, put them to work!

There are many ways to involve your dog in your wedding ceremony, but the two most popular ways are to attach a ring bearer collar to them and allow them to “present” the rings, or to simply have them accompany you as you make your way down the aisle if you do not have a father or grandfather to walk you. This usually works better for outdoor weddings or small, intimate ceremonies where your pet can be easily controlled, but if your dog is trained very well and you have people who can help you, it can work for larger, indoor weddings as well.

Obviously, the first thing you will need to figure out is if your ceremony location will allow it. Once you square that away, it is a good idea to make sure you have members of the bridal party or ushers who are willing to assist you should your dog not feel like cooperating. Also, do you think your pet is trained well enough? If you think your dog’s behavior will be too unpredictable, it might be best to pass on the idea. On the other hand, all animals can be unpredictable, so don’t be too quick to pass up a potentially fun, memorable element for your wedding day. Not only is it a cute touch to your overall ceremony, but it can make you feel right at home at the altar if for some reason you do not have someone to walk you down the aisle. Also makes a great photo op to share with everyone on your wedding website. Your beloved pooch can give you just as much love and affection on your big day—provided they don’t slobber on your dress.
